A Personal Message From Spine Specialist Dr. Elena Johnson, PT

Spine Specialist |
In general it is estimated that 5-10% of population are suffering from sciatica. Basically sciatica is an irritation of sciatic nerve. Sciatic nerve runs from your spine through you buttock and down your leg all the way down your toes. Sciatic nerve may get irritated at any point along it's course: in the spine, in the buttock or anywhere down the leg.
My patients who are suffering from this nasty problem complain that they have numbness and tingling or sometimes burning down the leg. In more severe cases they talk about muscle weakness, or falling because they can't lift their toes up when walking. Usually they can't sit or drive for very long. Sleeping becomes an issue and finally it gets so bad that they have to take time off work. Or they tell me that that they feel ok while sitting, but the minute they stand up, pain shoots down the leg only to make them sit back down after 5 minutes of walking... Sometimes sciatica gets so bad that they come in shifted to one side and are unable to stand up straight. Sounds familiar? When sciatica starts, it’s easy to think “oh it’s just an ache and will go away tomorrow”. Or maybe you assume you just sat for too long, lifted something wrong, slept wrong... Even worse, maybe you think “it’s normal” because you’re getting older… There are many triggers of sciatica: disks, facet joints of your spine or muscle tension. Usually sciatica is a symptom of something else, like long standing back pain that was never taken care of. Most of my patients say they have had back pain or hip pain for years, but now the pain down the leg is so bad and it is difficult to sleep that they have to do something about it. If this is how you are feeling, you are not alone. In fact, every day at Healing in Motion Physical Therapy we help people in and around Westminster who are suffering from sciatica get back to activities they love and enjoy them for years to come. You see, with sciatica, most of our patients ask us the same questions… Why can't I get comfortable? (I don’t even know what I did…) Will my leg pain ever go away? Why does my leg feel weak? What do I need to do to get a full night sleep? Will I need surgery? Unfortunately, there’s a lot of bad information out there that causes people to live with sciatica for way too long. This is why I put together this E-Book of free advice on what you can do at home to make yourself feel better. Over the years of treating patients who suffer from sciatica pain I tend to see the same mistakes. Mistake #1: Thinking that pain in your buttock or on pins and needles sensation down your leg will go away with rest. Mistake #2: Believing that back and leg pain will be “fixed” with painkillers. Mistake #3: Assuming that weakness in your leg is a “normal” part of getting older… Mistake #4: Believing that since you tried other healthcare professionals (maybe even Physical Therapy) in the past means that it won’t work now. Mistake #5: Relying on “Dr. Google” or YouTube for exercises that didn’t make any difference (or maybe even made your sciatica symptoms worse!) Mistake #6: Getting relaxing massages to temporary relieve leg stiffness, only to find it comes back after the massage wears off. Sounds familiar? In fact, we help people with that exact issue every day. And that’s why we’ve created a FREE Sicatica Pain guide for you. It goes over 8 Natural Ways to Ease Sicatica Without Medication or Visits to Your Doctor’s Office (and you can click on the button above to download it). But maybe you feel like you’ve read a lot of free information on the internet, and really just want to talk to someone about your problem. Is that you? If so, then we have a special opportunity for you (one that VERY FEW clinics offer). We save a limited number of spots each week for people who are not sure what to do about their sciatica pain. That way, you can tell a professional your story, and get your question answered first, before ever making a commitment to book an appointment. Does that sound like something you would like to do? Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select a button to talk to the therapist. Don't want to fill out forms? Type into the chat below and we will get back to you as fast as we can. Here’s the most important thing… Most people get stuck trying to make a decision about what to do next. They go days, weeks, months (even years!) without taking action. The one thing we can guarantee is that by doing nothing, your leg pain won’t get better. So the next important thing is to take action. |

Look Who Else Came To Healing In Motion Physical Therapy And Left Feeling Healthy, Happy And More Active...
J.K. , 55, BoulderI saw Elena on a number of occasions for lower back pain for myself, and interestingly – for the same problem for my teenage son. Every time she was able to help by doing manual adjustments, dry needling, and showing me what I could do myself. With my son, we had seen a doctor of osteopathy, and a chiropractor – all with limited improvement; but after just one session with Elena, and some instructions for how he should stand, and what exercises he should do, he felt significantly better. Elena has a warm, kind, easy-going presence that makes one feel better even before she puts her hands on you. At the same time, she is a master of her craft – she really knows the body, and has a great intuition that allows her to zero in on what causes the pain.!! |
R.G., 58, Wheat RidgeElena is the best! She is very precise in her massages and manual therapy, including dry needling, as well as in her excellent instruction on correct posture and form in teaching on the Pilates Reformer. All of these methods combined (as well as eventually a Reformer for my home so I could continue to strengthen daily) have helped me greatly to deal with chronic pain due to scoliosis, sciatica, and now a hip issue. Not only that but she is friendly and outgoing and a delight to be around! |
